”Please sit down!”

”In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening do not withhold your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, either this or that…”  (Eccl.11:6)

”May I sit down and rest my sore legs for a moment?” I asked the owner of an outdoor café.  Sure, he was mr hospitality himself, and a conversation was soon going on.  With him was a Danish friend who refreshed himself with a bier.

”Do you like Denmark?” I asked the owner who was from Iraq, but had lived here for 15 years.  “Yes and No”, he said. -  “Why No?” – ”Well everything is do dead – there´s no life!”  These were his words.

I said, ”I agree.  Whereever I go, I meet death.  It would be that way in your country too,  - what I mean is spiritual death.  We have this problem in common:  We have rebelled against God, and so the spiritual life connection has been sadly lost.

The friend of the Iraqi owner, whose name was Morten, intervened: ”There is no God. If there were, why does He allow wars and all that to happen?”

”The problem is not with God, but with us who have ruled God out in our schools, in our government, in business life, in our private life and in the public”, I replied.  “If you were in trouble and I knocked on your door, because I was able to help you, but you wouldn´t let me in, can you blame me then that you are miserable?”

The Iraqi man listened quietly.  I said to Morten, ”If you will give up your rebellion against God, He is there with open arms!”  I stretched out my arms to illustrate my point.  Morten said, “He will be hanged up then, wasn´t that what happened?”  I said, “You are right, Jesus was hanged up on the cross to save you and me, but that´s what my little card is about, I have given you.  Take good care of it.”

The owner also got my card that tells about the cross on our flag and what it all means.  He said, “You are always welcome here!”  I expressed the hope of seeing them both again.

The Iraqui friend showed concern towards me, ”Are you really walking all the way home?” -  ”Oh yes, my doctor encourages me to do that, you know, but I take a break once in a while…”

I limped my way home, thankful for the opportunity to sow a word of life at one the tables of the outdoor café while the sun was shining and smiling graciously at us. -jn-
