”They crossed the ford…”  2 Sam. 19:18.

The above Bible verse is really about David and his household crossing the Jordan River to return from his exile to his home in Jerusalem.

As believers in Jesus Christ we may soon cross our Jordan, the river of death, too, and I never forget the words of a dying friend, “David walked through the valley of the shadow of death, but Lazarus “was carried by the angels”  (Luke 16:22), and I believe I will too!”  A triumphant testimony, indeed!

This coming Wednesday a close friend of ours for more than 40 years, will be buried.  She and her husband ran a beautiful farm for many years.  One of their sons has taken over, but made rooms for his good parents who raised 8 choice children, 5 girls and 3 boys.  When their children and their spouses and their grandchildren show up they alone will be a crowd of more than 40 persons.  So the happy funeral will be a draw of many friends.  The name of the godly woman, now with the Lord, is Bodil. Her husband´s name is Kaj.

Yes, it will be a memorial to the glory of Christ.  Their home was always an extremely hospitable home, and they  loved to see people coming.  Kaj was a proficient singer and Bodil was quietly accompanying at the piano.  She was also valued as a church organist.   There was much singing in their home, so at a certain time song books were distributed, and a “joyful noise unto the Lord” was made, and Kaj would have a word to share with us.  Bodil exhibited an atmosphere of joy, humor, cheerfulness, quick wit, and I personally always felt relaxed and refreshed in her presence.  Their home spelled the word hospitality more than any other home I know of.

Now she crossed the river of death 3 days ago.  We were at her death bed some days before.  She was so beautiful, so peaceful and from her pillow she had the view of some nearby lakes (see the picture above) which we with our girls have enjoyed with the family so many times.   Now she is “away from the body and at home with the Lord”  (2 Cor. 5:8) in a conscious, unbroken fellowship with the Lord and the many He has already called home, “enrolled in Heaven” (Hebr. 12:23).

Don´t shun death beds, my friend, the death bed of a saved soul will tune you into the right perspective of life  and encourage you more boldly to point to Christ Jesus, our only Rock of salvation for time and eternity until you too in triumph will cross the river!
