My daily ”health” walks often make me stop at the beautiful foyer of our nearby parish church (Lutheran state church) where I can rest for a few moments, read the newspaper and also sit down with some of the employees of the church – yesterday they included the female vicar, the female parish clerk and one of the garden workers.  “What about a cup of coffee?” I was kindly asked.  I always welcome that.

”I listened to a hymn on the TV service”, I said, ”and I was so thrilled that I immediately wrote a hymn of my own on that majestic tune, but few of my friends know it!” -  ”Oh, it´s my favorite hymn” the vicar smiled, - she´s a pretty young widow by the way.  The parish clerk started humming the tune.  Then we talked about  obligatory Sunday´s text on Lazarus (from John 11).  You know in the Lutheran church its ministers have by law been assigned which bible text they´re supposed to preach on.   I told them that I´d also listened to a radio service where the Lutheran minister had said, “Notice, the Lord didn´t say, “I have the life, - but I am the life!”  John 11:25.  In other words the resurrection life begins already now for those who´ve trusted Jesus.”  I told them how that truth fills me with joy right now.  My churchy friends smiled.

Afterwards it struck me how powerful the gospel of Christ is.  Sad to say our Lutheran (national) church is now considering the acceptance of a new law that allows homosexuals to be married in the church with a wedding ceremony and rituals adapted for homosexuals.  Indeed, “Woe to those who enact evil statutes (laws), Isa. 10:1, which will undermine our culture, nay the culture of the whole western world.  Well, we must say with the angel in Rev. 22:11, ”Let the one who does wrong still do wrong, … and let the one who is holy, still keep himself holy.”  At the same time we want to turn the gospel of Christ loose.  You don´t have to explain that a lion is a lion, just let it loose and you´ll soon find out, mr. Spurgeon is supposed to have said.  It is that way with the gospel, isn´t it?

However unworthy I am, my best moments are always those when I testify face to face to someone about the saving gospel of Jesus Christ.  “Who is adequate for these things?”  (2 Cor. 2:16).  Nobody is, but He has in His undeserved grace “made us adequate as servants of a new covenant” (3:6)  -  the covenant of grace.   The covenant of the gospel. On land, by sea and in the air which has often been a fine place for me to be at as His witness.
