This was Abraham´s self-experienced testimony (Gen. 22:14) at a certain crucial time of testing.  By a hair´s breadth God provided what was needed.

You have probably read or heard about George Mueller of Bristol, England, that man of faith so mightily used by God in the lives of many orphans.  He once wrote on his steamy window, “Jehovah Jireh”, i.e. “The Lord will provide”.   And He certainly did in many needy situations.

In my modest “boot camp” days with New Tribes Mission in Pa. we never went hungry to bed.  The Lord provided abundantly for us. However, some of us could go spiritually hungry to bed.  Things didn´t always go so smoothly.  One brother pointed to Phil. 4:19:  “My God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in Christ Jesus.”  He said, “God will take care of our spiritual needs, too!”  I needed that encouragement, and I still do.

“How are you doing?” goes the mechanical greeting without real meaning.  There are times when you feel tempted to say, “I´m not doing so well right now, in fact I´m very much afflicted, but I´m looking to the Lord to provide what I need!”  And you may ask, “What about you?  Is everything so smooth and rose-colored with you?  Quite frankly, what is the Lord doing with you these days?”  Don’t just play that “How are you doing”-game!

Abraham in his testimony looked back at God´s concrete provision for him, the burnt-offering, which foreshadowed Christ, the Lamb of God.  We look to Calvary where the need of our lost condition was taken care of.  And the Bible says, “He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things?”  (Rom. 8:32).  One of my preaching friends once complained “I just have no power!”  A godly woman went up to him and quoted Rom. 8:32,  “When it says “all things”, does that include “power”, too?” she asked.  He got the message.

So it really boils down to this:  Christ is the answer of our immediate need.  I like the words of John Bunyan when writing about his spiritual troubles, “It is good to be on your knees and hold forth Christ in your arms!”  For He is the answer to our need. “Even now!” (Joh. 11:22)
