The Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen is to an enlightened Christian a powerful and relevant object lesson about the futility of man at his best.  At least it is to me.  More than 50 years ago, in the infancy of the Common Market in Europe, Henri Spaak, the Belgian foreign minister, who was one of its fathers, expressed the hope that a coming political genius would some day emerge and go straight to the point cutting this and that Gordian knot in Europe and thus ending all arguments and show true leadership.  “We don´t know who he is and from where he comes, but we know he´s coming, and we are expecting him”, he said in the radio.

The big conference in Copenhagen with the greatest world leaders gathered under Danish chairmanship went wrong owing to lack of leadership, so the Danish prime minister had to throw in the towel and humbly acknowledge his defeat.  Then Hillary Clinton came along in good form and good-humored and immediately took over together with some of the European key men.  The real fond and expectant hope however is the today´s coming of the U.S. president.  One of our TV hosts put it this way yesterday, “He can do what no other man in this world can do!”  (Literally quoted).

Henri Spaak was right.  Europe is crying louder and louder for another superman, a “Führer”, a supernatural genius with a genius´ qualities, to take over. Does that ring a bell, my Bible believing friend?  I hope it does.  The world will soon be prepared to welcome that genius foretold in God´s word, in Rev. 13 called “the beast”.  The world will look at him and welcome him as the most gifted leader.  God looks at him as a beast.  The winds blowing over our bewildered Continent are prophetic hints about what´s coming.  We, God´s people, have not excuse to be ignorant about it.

But we´re not looking for Anti-Christ.  There will be “distress of nations in perplexity” (the Copenhagen conference certainly reflects that in no uncertain terms), but God´s people is encouraged to “straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”  Luke 21:28.

Christ is coming.  He´s the only One who can do what no other man can do.  I remember Billy Graham saying in his younger days that he had met and talked to most of the world leaders and had been met with pessimism everywhere.  “Do you have any hope for the world of tomorrow”, Winston Churchill asked him in a private audience in 1954.  “Yes”, the evangelist answered and went on reading about the Lord´s coming from his pocket New Testament, and then he suggested some minutes of prayer together.

This is real the bottom line of the Copenhagen “object lesson”. And you may add your own thoughts to it.
