“You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?”  (Luke 12:56)

I remember how Billy Graham challenged us to read the newspaper with one hand and the Bible with the other hand.  His point was of course to be alert as to what happens and let the Bible enlighten us to understand our present time and act.  How does this apply to us as Christians?

Our news tells us how the ongoing corona pandemic has taken us by surprise – and the stop-gap solutions don´t stop new outbreaks.

How should we as Christians interpret all this?  Jesus knew how to interpret the disturbing alarm bells around Him to which He gave this answer, “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3)

So our time should be understood in the light of the urgency of the gospel which Jesus boiled down to these words, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe the gospel.”  (Mk. 1:15)

As Christians our objective should be to “do the work of an evangelist” (2 Tim. 4:5) no matter what our particular “gift” happens to be.  I like the answer my friend Ian Paisley in Belfast gave when once asked how he wanted to be remembered, “As a preacher of the gospel!” He said.  He did mistakes, but a guy like that I wouldn´t keep a too tight rein on.

My grandfather was an independent business man, but his name will always be remembered as a zealous ambassador for Jesus Christ and not as a business man only. How do you and I want to be remembered?  Indeed, how do we as gospel Christians interpret his present time?

Alas, we have failed, and so the apostle challenges us, “Do this knowing the time, that now it´s high time to awake out of sleep…” etc. and be like the sons of Issachar “who had understanding of the times to know what Israel ought to do.”  1 Chron. 12:32.  This is possible according to the word of God, but then we have to wake up anew.  Eph. 5:14. - 7/30/20 - jn
