One of our late cartoonists has a funny drawing of two men meeting in complete darkness.  One of them says, “Excuse me, Sir, can you please tell me where I am?” He gets answer, “You´re standing right before me!”

I thought of its spiritual wisdom.  Our soul may at times be in a strange darkness asking the same question, “Where am I?”  And the answer will be, “Right here, before me, i.e. in the Lord´ presence.

A young girl was praying, “Lord, do find me for I can´t find myself!”  A Christian may be in a similar situation going through a strange darkness despite the fact that he is a child of the Light (John 8:12).

Some know what I´m talking about.  It´s not because of sin, on the contrary it sometimes happens to dear God fearing souls, for it says in Isa. 50:10, “Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the voice of His servant (i.e. Christ)? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God.”

Nay, ”let him!” The fair weather faith has little weight, but the faith and trust in His name, the name of Christ, in the dark has.  I can´t palm off my experiences of darkness on others, - they differ from case to case – but I may testify of Him who has let me trust in His name in the darkest hour.

I was once on my way to a morning service in Norway.  That morning was for some reason a dark one and I didn´t feel like going to any platform.  As I look back I believe it was the good Holy Spirit who was ministering His “Let him!” to my soul.  And this He will do for you too.

My walk was pretty long, but I found myself repeating again and again the words of the afflicted David, “But I have trusted in Your mercy, my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation, I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me!”  (Ps. 13:5-6).  I took that word as a promise.

Indeed, it was like shoe leather to my faith, and I need not tell you of the boldness His Spirit gave before a lovable congregation that rejoiced with me. Now, are you in darkness?  I won´t last! See  John 12:46.
