. Of course it must wring the hearts of those Trump fans that see their choice candidate exposed to public contempt because of his immorality. Even his wife winces at the 2005 video. Trump has immediately apologized, but how we would like to see him as a truly repentant sinner deprived of all self-important pride like David in Ps. 51.
In America I sometimes sat down on a lonely bench with a religious interlocutor to let him understand, "Religion nor your church can´t save you. You must come to the place in Luke 18:13, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner!" and we would read that very word together.
This was the prayer the anointed U.S. army chaplain, Henry Gerecke, heard more than once when he ministered to the war criminals at the Nuremberg trial in 1946. To some it was a genuine heartbroken prayer, to others maybe not. But how I came to love that chaplain for his gospel ministry which for personal reasons was not too easy to him.
Mr Trump faces a gleeful world who forgets that it too has many sins, sexual sins too, on their lives as they hypocritically move around in elevated circles, for "there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account." (Hebr. 4:13). And: "There is no partiality with God." Rom.2:11
Two preachers on a walk in Copenhagen were approached by a depraved bum on a dark street . One preacher said to his fellow preacher, a friend of mine, "That man is me if it were not for the grace of God.
The tax collector in Luke 18 had come to the point that he was the sinner, and he didn´t try to shift his guilt onto other sinners. No, in the Greek it doesn´t say "a sinner", but "the sinner". That´s the way we came broken for mercy to start with, and we stay that way before God and yet washed in the blood of Jesus, justified in Christ alone, the Savior of the lost.
