When we started out from our parking lot on Nov. 22 and bowed our heads in prayer I had the same feeling when putting my feet on American soil, viz. I start from scratch! A feeling of excitement, though, in which mood I was taken to the train.
In one of our major cities, Ålborg, a precious, disabled couple gave me charitable shelter for 6 awesome days. One highlight was the encounter with an ardent atheist one Saturday downtown where he´d agreed on meeting me. We had already had many encounters on the open debate columns, but this was the first time we met face to face. I didn´t win him for Christ that day, and yet the contact and the confidence he showed me was of such a touching nature that I felt the Lord was moving “in a mysterious way His wonders to perform”. He is now, even more now, on my heart and in my prayers.
I was invited to speak to the saints at various occasions, and the Lord gave me much liberty despite the fact that I found myself in rather charismatic circles with a lot of unhealthy emotionalism and very little good teaching and expository preaching. But the Lord has His people everywhere, and loving hearts certainly met me. I have to humbly admit that I, too, had some things to learn in terms of taking a low place before God´s people.
In my early days as a babe in Christ I was very shy, - but the Lord has in His mercy and grace helped over that hurdle long ago. What a joy and privilege to mingle with the people in that part of Denmark. My little attractive gospel card is running out, but soon a fresh supply will be printed as a handy small folder in the same size and design, but this same in five languages! I´m very excited about that “product development” to be used to the glory of Christ when travelling abroad.
One night, at a home meeting, a charming Romanian little girl, 7 years of age, came up to me and took my hand to support me (yes, a game really though my feet are sometimes a little shaky on the floor). She speaks pretty good Danish too and we sang together a children´s gospel chorus two or three times with gesticulations – in Danish and English. I think the adults were blessed also, so in the future I don´t think I can preach without such a loving support!
The season for making “Advent wreaths” are near. So I wrote an Advent hymn, and the sweet local librarian let me produce that hymn free of charge provided I would “bestow” one copy on her also! Oh, the opportunities for witnessing are “legion”, aren´t they?
Let this be a piece of encouragement to you too! - jn
