These very days the passage in Acts 18:24-28 has been a real challenge to me anew.  I have some immediate reasons for being drawn to that particular story about Apollos.  He was well equipped, spoke well and yet he needed the married couple Priscilla and Aquila to take him aside a little, and they patiently “explained to him the way of God more accurately”.

What a fine, God pleasing and gracious example to follow.  No harsh warning was issued against him.  They didn´t see eye to eye with him on some doctrinal matters, but a good, humble spirit was prevailing on both sides in which reviving atmosphere it was possible to help Apollos to make him a still more blessing to the body of Christ, nay to the Jewish people.

“You speak like an Apollos”, a Norwegian preacher said to me in my very early age. Alas,  I´m afraid it just puffed me up, for little did I know how much I needed a similar “explaining” ministry in my life.  There was a lot I had to be straightened out about.  There still is from time to time.

Priscilla and Aquila went direct to Apollos.  They didn´t go to a lot of other believers to zealously announce how wrong Apollos was.  That was not God´s way.  For Apollos was no “Jehovah´s witness”, nor a Mormon, nor an Agnostic.  He was just a brother who needed help.

May that gracious spirit prevail among us to the glory of Jesus Christ!
