(Dedicated especially to those working in the field)

Permit me, by way of testimony, to share with you a wonderful Bible word of which you are permitted to avail yourself too.

In Gen. 39:5 it reads, “So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian´s house for Joseph´s sake, and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had in the house and in the field”.  Joseph is, as you will know, a type or picture of our Lord Jesus Christ, “the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls”  (1 Pet. 2:25).

Once He is the Lord and Overseer of our homes and businesses, His blessings will not fail.  Our homes need not be perfect to have His blessings, in fact no homes are.
The Sunday school children are sometimes singing, “With Jesus in the family you have a happy life…”  (I don´t know if there is an equivalent in English).

So when we are bold enough to invite people into our modest home for spiritual fellowship, we don´t do it because our home is perfect, but because of the blessings of Christ which we want to share with others.  There are enough of them.  It´s as simple as that.

When I read the words “and in the field”, I must smile.  These very words have fond memories.  I was a salesman for many years.  Back home in the office I was often introduced to others with the words, “Our man in the field.”  I liked that.  At one time I was marketing a special architect-designed chair in beech-wood.  It could somehow be folded, so I took it under my arm and called on many retailers in Germany and Norway with that Danish piece of wonder.  These countries were my “field”.  To visiting friends in our home, I sometimes said with enthusiasm, “May I show you my blessed chair?”  That became from now on a good-natured joke, almost a proverb.

A preacher friend of mine said with similar enthusiasm to me, “Jørn, that chair is blessed, because you are blessed!”  He was so right.  I was not a smart salesman at all.  I was blessed because of the presence of my blessed “Overseer” in the field.  Was I perfect? No.  Did I never make mistakes?  Yes, a lot.  And yet I was under or bestowed with “every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ”.  (Eph. 1:3).  But that certainly had a bearing on those things “which are on earth”, too (v.10).

And one more important thing.  I had and has a bearing on our gospel testimony!

Let this wonderful word from Gen. 39:5 be an encouragement to you also.  There are some Christian homes I can´t even walk in to.  They don´t seem to be like cups running over.  There are others I visit, and I immediately sense the Lord is there and my spirit is refreshed.  O, let us see to it that we follow the example of Potiphar who “had him (Joseph) made overseer of his house and all that he had…”

Many private homes in America and Denmark are waiting for the “Overseer´s”  blessing.
