William Kelly (1820-1906), a highly competent scholar, graduated
from the Trinity College, Dublin, was once challenged and flattered
by a professor who suggested that he settled down as  teacher in which
capacity he could make a fortune in the world.  Kelly replied, “What world?”

The world has this and that award
with vanity´s appeal,
the world goes gladly overboard
to make you happy feel!

The world believes in self-esteem
and means it well and good,
you thus fulfill the U.S. dream
like stars in Hollywood!

Behold, there is a better way
that has far better worth:
To know God loves you day by day
draws Heaven near on earth!

For you Christ chose a low esteem
as Savior for your soul,
no worldly charm can you redeem
nor can your soul make whole!

The love of Christ makes fame so cheap,
so be content in Him!
His grace is as the ocean deep
in which your soul may swim!

But with your friends do freely swing,
don´t spare the gospel´s smile
that shows much more than anything
what made your life worthwhile!
